Pipe Visual Inspection

PIKA-X2 is a robotic imaging and measurement system which is designed for pipe inspection and quality control. PIKA-X2 uses a geometric adaptation mechanism, enabling navigation inside pipes with variable inner diameter. All the inspection and measurement operations are computerized and can be controlled via a workstation.d

.PIKA-X2 components are integrated in a ruggedized case, which provides an ideal portable solution for field investigations

PIKA-X2 Components

The motion module comprises of 6 driving wheels and a rotating head. This equipment drives the robot along the pipe and rotates the head around the pipe axis. The wheels are mounted on radial arms which located PIKA-X2 on the pipe axis. This facilitates the robot to be able to navigate in pipes with different inner diameters and even pipes with variable inner diameter. The ability of PIKA-X2 to move coaxial at the pipe guarantees accurate inner diameter measurement and excellent image quality.l

The motion module of PIKA-X2 is equipped with displacement an angular sensor, which help the operator monitor and record PIKA-X2’s position during inspection and measurements.x

PIKA-X2 is connected to control workstation via a cable or a wireless module. In wireless models, the wireless pack also includes rechargeable batteries which provide electrical power to the device.x

In cabled models PIKA-X2 can also be powered via car or truck battery which is favorable for field applications.x

PIKA-X2 includes a head for visual inspection and another head for inner diameter measurements. The imaging head is capable of taking still and motion pictures of both front and side view of the pipe. Each head can be easily connected to PIKA-X2 motion module using a quick-fit mechanism.z

Inner Diameter Measurement and Profilometry

The measurement head is equipped with a laser displacement sensor for accurate measurement of inner diameter. Using the Profilometry software embedded PIKA-X2 it can measure inner diameter in different angles and give a profile of the pipe cross-section measured at 0.01mm accuracy.k

Imaging and Morphometry

The imaging head makes use of two high quality zoom cameras for imaging front and side view of the pipe. Controlled LED light sources are used to obtain best illumination inside the pipe.s

The imaging head also contain two laser pointers which are used to mark reference point on captured image for calibration purpose. These reference points further are used in PIKA-X2 Morphometry software to make accurate geometric measurements on 2D images.x
